Fairhaven has a rich history dating back to the whaling era. Henry Huttleston Rogers of Standard Oil wealth built many structures and gifted them to the townspeople of Fairhaven including the Town Hall, Millicent Library, and the Rogers Elementary School and Fairhaven High School. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt used to summer in Fairhaven with his maternal grandparents and the family home is now a Bed and Breakfast on Walnut Street.
The shores of the center of Fairhaven are on the New Bedford Harbor and are shared with the city, the port with the most valuable fishing catch in the country. Northeast Maritime Institute is located in the heart of the center of town and our building was the first Unitarian Church in town and later the Boy’s and Girl’s Club.
